Dayton Duncan (born 1949) was the writer and co-producer of the Ken Burns documentary The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. He has also worked on a number of other Ken Burns series, including The Civil War, Horatio’s Drive, Baseball, and Jazz, throughout the course of his career. Duncan worked as a co-writer and consultant producer on the 12-hour television series The West, which was aired in 1996 and was about the history of the American West. The Organization of American Historians presented it with the Erik Barnouw Award for excellence in historical writing. Among his many accomplishments include writing and producing Lewis and Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery, a four-hour documentary that aired in November 1997.
The film had the second-highest ratings (behind only The Civil War) in the history of PBS, and it was recognised with a Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, a Spur Award from the Western Writers of America, a CINE Golden Eagle, and many other awards. He was a co-writer and producer of Mark Twain, a four-hour film biography of the famous American humorist that aired on PBS in 200He is also the author of many books. His second collaboration with Burns was Horatio’s Drive: America’s First Road Journey, a documentary about the first transcontinental car trip, for which he created the script and served as executive producer as well. It was nominated for a Telly Award and received the coveted Christopher Award.
Duncan worked in politics for a number of years, including as chief of staff to New Hampshire governor Hugh Gallen, deputy national press secretary for Walter Mondale’s presidential campaign in 1984, and national press secretary for Michael Dukakis’ presidential campaign in 198As head of the American Heritage Rivers Advisory Committee, President Clinton named him, and Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt appointed him as a director of the National Park Foundation. Duncan now serves on the boards of directors for the Student Conservation Association, the National Conservation System Foundation, and the New Hampshire Humanities Council, among other organisations.
